Fr. John Shanahan started the parish in 1851. Fr. Tomas Dalton bought the current land in 1857. In 1859 they finished building the new building and turned the old wooden church into a school. The Sisters of Mercy came in 1863 to help with the school and orphanage. The old church had problems because it had no foundation and was just bricks on soil. They dedicated the current church in 1950. It has the windows and bell from the older building.
